USLAW Solidarity Statement With Iraqi Unions And Civil Society
February 7, 2020
To Our Sisters and Brothers in the Iraqi Trade Union and Civil Society Movements:
We in U.S. Labor Against the War stand with you as you struggle to achieve democratic governance in your country, free from corruption and foreign interference by any country. We stand with you in your demands for the provision of honest and widespread public services to the Iraqi people, whether in housing, water quality, employment, and every other aspect of human welfare, and a government free from corruption that serves and is answerable to the Iraqi people.
When we were with you a year ago in Baghdad at the 10th anniversary conference of the Iraq Civil Society Solidarity Initiative (ICSSI), we heard clearly your insistent demand that Iraq be a fully independent country, in particular free from the conflict between the United States and Iran. We were impressed and encouraged by your dedication to building a robust civil society in Iraq. Please know that we in the United States are determined to do whatever we can to mobilize our people to oppose and end U.S. interference in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East, and U.S. belligerence directed at Iran.
We extend our solidarity to you, in words and in struggle, as we move towards a bright future for the working class of our two countries, joined in common against corrupt and brutal corporate power.
In struggle and solidarity,
Yasemin Zahra,
Chair on behalf of USLAW Executive Committee
Michael Zweig,
Liaison to Iraqi Civil Society on behalf of USLAW Representatives Committee
