Freedom House’s annual survey of political rights and civil liberties classify Iraq as “Not Free” scoring 6 ▼ , a Not Free country is one where basic political rights are absent, and basic civil liberties are widely and systematically denied. Freedom in the World 2013 adds “Iraq’s political rights rating declined due to the concentration of power in the hands of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and growing pressure on the opposition, as exemplified by the arrest and death sentence in absentia of Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, the country’s most senior Sunni Arab politician.
