Campaign for Children’s Health in Iraq

The Campaign for Children’s Health in Iraq emerged from the Third Annual conference of The Iraqi Civil Society Solidarity Initiative (ICSSI), held in Erbil, the capital city of northern Iraq’s Kurdistan region, October 8-9. 2011. Approximately 250 individuals and representatives of civil society organizations – Iraqis and internationals – attended. The conference statement, issued six weeks before the final withdrawal of US forces, focuses on social justice, human rights, freedom, and self-determination for Iraqi citizens. Expert panelists and audience members examined the many serious problems resulting from the wars, sanctions and ongoing violence and instability in Iraq, including environmental degradation and increasing health problems across the population, especially in children. Conference participants committed to working on a number of campaigns over the coming year, including a Campaign for Children’s Health in Iraq, which ICAE will help coordinate.
