Statement of the Iraqi Water Week 14-22 March 2023
Water management in Iraq and its scarcity since 20 years of promised progress and a worse water situation than ever before.
Twenty years after regime change, the military operation that toppled Saddam Hussein’s regime and the ensuing chaos resulted in significant environmental destruction including the drying up of Iraq’s historic marshes and widespread neglect of water and environmental concerns and policies. With the formation of a new government came new promises and new hope for better protection of water and the environment.
This statement is launched by the Hamat Nahr Association for Iraqi and international individuals and organizations who participated effectively in the second season of the “Iraqi Water Week” (14-22 March 2023).
