People of Iraq Campaign to Save the Tigris announces its support to the global mobilization that took place on the framework of the International Day of Action Against Dams and Rivers, Water and Life yesterday March 14th. People will gather in Muthanabi street, a popular street in downtown Baghdad at 10 am to raise Awareness about this occasion. It was adopted by the participants of the first International Meeting of People Affected by Dams, March 1997 in Curitiba Brazil and since then communities affected by dams all over the world denounce the energetic model that, since a long time ago has caused devastating socio-economic, cultural and environmental consequences. Today, The People of Iraq Campaign to Save the Tigris as part of Save the Tigris Campaign is taking part of this global action to protect our most precious treasure: The Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Today, civil society stand in solidarity with the world and demands the Iraqi Government to include civil society to achieve better results in negotiations for a trans boundary water agreement with Turkey, Iran and Syria on the shares of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The people of Iraq demand an agreement that ensures fair water quantities that sustain life and agriculture in Iraq. This is our contribution to strengthening the international movement. Our aim is to raise our voices in unison against destructive water development projects, reclaim the health of our rivers and watersheds, and demand the equitable and sustainable management of our waterways. The Save the Tigris campaign is is an advocacy campaign that started in March 2012 by a coalition of civil society organizations from Iraq, Turkey and Iran. It has been a year since we started and we are taking steady steps to be part of the global mobilization against dams in our case specifically addressing the Ilisu Dam and other big dams and raising awareness among the Iraqi people to work together and to reclaim our rivers.
